If Alistair Mordechai has his Reservoir Dogs, Maes has always had Elaine's Grace - although that obviously wasn't the blade's name since its beginnings, given how supreme sovereignty over the Fifth World has changed hands thrice. Hunters of Elaine's Grace, however, have always exclusively been members of the Brotherhood in Violence as much as Maes can manage to make them.
Each Hunter of Elaine's Grace has always been the chosen wielder of one of the God Weapons in the Brotherhood's possession (weapons, we note, that Maes stole from the Methuselah with Alistair's help). Keeping in tradition with Brotherhood's ways, there are never any more or less than seven members, and each one of them represents a virtue.
ABEL MORDECHAI Alias: Justice, Chosen Wielder of the Wings of Therion
RIVERS HUNTER [CHANGELING LINE]; LEADER OF ELAINE’S GRACE / GRAY BISHOP [KINGFISHER] Maes Mordechai’s adopted son, made official by the fact that the Alder Tree has recognized him as one of its own. Abel’s a gentle giant, all impeccable manners, soft spoken words and methodical gestures – worlds away from Rin, his surrogate younger brother. He also happens to be the blade leader of Elaine’s Grace, and as many say, a “true Mordechai” – ruthless on the field, always ready to cut his enemies down.
The Wings of Therion are the original weapons of St. August Denovere, an Obrimos Mage and one of the first Hunters of the Brotherhood. Although he performed many holy works in his life, he's best known for revealing the truth to a large contingent from the Malleus Maleficarum, and having them fill the Brotherhood's ranks.
Records state that the Wings were originally a pair of flintlock pistols that Godhand Denovere had a habit of converting into other weapons and tools to suit his purposes whenever the situation called for it. After his death, however, all other wielders of the Wings have reported that they have been able to will the Wings to transform on the battlefield.
PLOT POINTS AS OF 03 OCTOBER 2016
Traditionally, the Wings appear to be attracted to leader figures or potential leaders within their faith, and often choose wielders during times of great need. As such, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that the Wings are the Sacred Weapons that are continuously carving out a path for God, and ensuring the survival of the flock. Nevertheless, it is hard for many to ignore the fact that personal accounts from the Wing’s previous wielders right down to August himself have claimed to hear the voices of angels from the Wings. Some have even admitted to instances where they “lost control” of the Wings and found themselves doing things as though they were possessed by something else entirely.
Abel has remained behind in the Philippines in order to watch over the Pound. He is one of Maes' agents on the archipelago while the majority of the Brotherhood is in Ireland.
RIN FAOLAIN Alias: Charity, Chosen Wielder of Enoch's Stride
MAGE [OBRIMOS; LEGACY: VOX TORITUNI] / NUMBER OF THE THRONES [106, "CAORTHANNACH, THE SAINTSBANE"] / GRAY KNIGHT [KINGFISHER & SWALLOWTAIL] Potty-mouthed and perpetually ragey, possessed of a mean streak and an unhealthy love for blowing shit up, the fiery-haired Rin ought to have his picture beside “Irish temper”. Rin picked up Enoch’s Stride on the day his family burned, all because they committed the sin of defying the Lucifuge: its former wielder was killed while attempting to save them. Rin Awakened at that moment; before he knew it, he was out in the rain with the staff cradled in his hands, and the ashes of his house, his family, and the Lucifuge agents who had come for them scattered around him.
The original weapon wielded by Valerian Remarque, a Card of the Hierophant Triumph and one of the Originals of the Brotherhood - thus making Godhand Remarque one of the oldest Cards in Vigil records. It initially looks like a decorated stick with little combat value beyond being a semi-decent walking stick. Only its wielder, however, can will Enoch’s Stride to extend into a full quarterstaff with extendable blades on either side.
Enoch’s Stride has the tendency to attract wielders who are keenly interested in the more esoteric pursuits of the faithful within the Vigil, or display a keen interest in the accumulation of knowledge. Relic experts have discovered that Enoch’s Stride “learns” as though it were fully sentient, and shares these stolen moments of insight with its wielder. As such, its wielder can “borrow” the skills and the memories of whatever Enoch’s Stride has managed to pick up since its time with Valerian. However, an unfortunate side effect of this exchange can be seen in how Enoch’s Stride’s weaker-willed wielders slowly grow obsessed with the power of knowledge, and often lose themselves in pursuit of it, thinking, wrongfully, that they are doing it for the greater glory of the Lady. This may be an allusion to how Valerian himself was, according to original accounts, predisposed towards obsessing over “the glories of that which is invisible”.
PLOT POINTS AS OF 03 OCTOBER 2016
Age only appears to have aggravated the crushing weight of Enoch’s Stride, as evidenced in how more of its wielders end up meeting unfortunate ends from wasting away or growing reckless in their pursuit of power through knowledge. Rin, however, seems to be managing really well so far. He claims that it's because his other King Liandrin trained him well, and "those stupid Mordechais" are "passable teachers".
Don’t tell Rin this, but the real reason why he’s perpetually annoyed by Abel but can’t seem to get enough of his company is probably because he has a crush on the guy. Sssh.
Rin was ordered to return to Falner - a move he agrees with, given that he wants to get to know his fellow Thrones. The boy is seriously considering joining Zangyaku.
LYALL Alias: Hope, Chosen Wielder of Sarai's Oath
CHANGELING [OGRE]; HOPE, THE CHOSEN WIELDER OF SARAI’S OATH / GRAY KNIGHT [WOLF] Nominally the “youngest” member of Elaine’s Grace by merit of the fact that she was stolen away by the Gentry at eight – the length of two human years that actually stretched out into nearly three centuries. The Blades of Izanagi liberated her and other children like her, but when they presented her to their King, Hikaru brought the girl to Maes instead. Godhand Mordechai was only too happy to take charge of raising her right, even before Sarai’s Oath took a shine to her.
The original “weapon” of Yvonne, an Elemental Changeling and founder of the Vestalis of the Holy Spirit. Sarai’s Oath is a strange piece of jewelry, compromised of five finely crafted rings (one for each finger) connected together by equally fine chains, and further connected to a series of interwoven bands that lock around its wielder’s wrist. The chains are designed to look like thorny branches, and the rings are engraved with leaves and flowers. Furthermore, the alloy of Sarai’s Oath registers as an impossible blend of cold iron and Arcadian mythril.
Wielders of Sarai’s Oath can will their Sacred Weapon to generate high-powered shields made of divine energy, and can also form projectiles made of light that are particularly harmful to the Fae. Furthermore, Sarai’s Oath makes its wielder and anyone its wielder blesses impervious to all forms of compulsion (mundane and supernatural) and other mind, emotion, or will-bending abilities. It can also free others from Faerie oaths or contracts, and protect anyone it chooses from the influence of the Gentry. The more contracts Sarai’s Oath breaks, the stronger the Sacred Weapon appears to become. Wielders of Sarai’s Oath can also access Faerie Contracts, or – in the case of Changeling wielders – augment their own knowledge of Contracts to a startling degree.
PLOT POINTS AS OF 03 JUNE 2016
Sarai’s Oath is attracted to Changeling wielders (these wielders, strangely enough, do not get harmed by the cold iron of the Sacred Weapon, and also seem to gain divine protection against their fundamental weakness for so long as the weapon is on their person), or any wielder who has suffered due to external pressure or untoward influence from forces and figures well beyond his or her control. It is also unique from its counterparts in the sense that it makes itself available to whoever needs it the most within the Brotherhood, regardless of whether the individual happens to be its “chosen” wielder or not. Records show that it has, on occasion, vanished and appeared on the hands of Vaizards in dire need of its protection, then re-materialized on its wielder’s person once the threat was abated.
While she views Maes as a surrogate father, Lyall’s true loyalties remain with the Blade King. Hikaru, however, has been silent on the matter.
Lyall is currently accompanying Rin at the Falner Estate. Maes felt that it would be safer for the girl to stay in... well, in the safest place for any member of the United Vigil at present.
ELA MARISIGAN Alias: Temperance, Chosen Wielder of the Smile of Janus
MAGE [MOROS; STYGIAN HERALD / NUMBER 014 OF THE THRONES, "THE SILENCE"]; TEMPERANCE, THE CHOSEN WIELDER OF THE SMILE OF JANUS / GRAY ROOK [WOLF] The youngest Vestalis currently operating on Philippine soil, a Moros Mage of exceptional talent given her age, and the sister that Estanislao Marisigan probably has a bit of a sister complex over. Mang Balisong – Ela’s mentor – suspected that she had been chosen by a Sacred Relic after attempting to take her under his wing as an Uncrowned King in training. He took it upon himself to contact Maes, and the rest is history. One of Ela’s pet projects at the moment is assisting the Philippine chapter of Talitha Kum, nuns who go undercover in brothels to combat sex trafficking. That MIGHT explain Ela’s occasionally interesting choice of clothes…
The weapon wielded by Cain, Orin the Green's first friend from the Fifth World and the first Riskbreaker ever chosen to become a Malice King even before the Duskriders came into the picture. It is said that Yahweh inspired him to make the scythe with Orin's guidance, and that Orin himself allowed him to use the void stone core of Janus, one of Orin's Tancred Golem brothers. The weapon's sentience, then, is attributed to the fact that the consciousness inhabiting the scythe is Janus himself.
The Smile of Janus is a variable weapon that usually takes the form of a scythe or sickle. It literally absorbs the "time" of whatever it cuts. The core of the weapon allows its wielder to then use the seconds/minutes/hours/days it has accumulated to manipulate the flow of time itself. Janus, however, is particular about THAT function of the Sacred Weapon, and only usually allows his wielders to passively view events from the past or peer into the future.
PLOT POINTS AS OF 03 OCTOBER 2016
The powers Taning and Ela potentially possess as Numbers of the Lucifuge Thrones are two sides of the same coin. Their abilities involve the direct manipulation of the Abyss, and Paradox-related Arcane Mysteries.
The Smile of Janus is attracted to wielders whose personal stories revolve around the discovery and protection of one's family, or who have had to make calls as equally difficult as the one Cain made when he chose to walk away from the Dragon and the Daywalker, and when he also abandoned Orin himself to the Golem's disinterest in the Vigil. The burden of his grief was what brought him into the Brotherhood, where Maes helped him find his purpose. Unfortunately, Cain was one of the casualties of the Secret War in Heaven.
Ela is currently accompanying Abel in the Philippines as support. This also allows her to remain close to Sabina and Taning, whom she's loathe to be far from after everything that has happened.
DOMINIC "DOM" LAUZIER Alias: Prudence, Chosen Samael's Song
BLADIAN OF THE BLOODY ROAD [BLOODSINGER: CAELIUS]; PRUDENCE, THE CHOSEN WIELDER OF SAMAEL’S SONG / GRAY BISHOP [BEAR] A fresh recruit to the Swiss Guard that Maes snatched away from the Vatican. The boy had reported hearing “strange whispers” beneath the Vatican. It was one thing to leave the Bladian to use his abilities (and, whenever possible, the abilities of his Singer) to guard the Pope. It was quite another to leave a Bladian chosen by Samael’s Song: that’s just a waste of good talent. Dominic (“Dom”, as his blade mates fondly call him) is the mother hen of Elaine’s Grace, and he cooks and bakes just as well as he eliminates his marks on engagement.
The original weapon of Lailah, one of the finest Vestalis in the Brotherhood of Violence's history. Godhands had recovered Lailah, a Jew, from certain death in Poveglia: city authorities had thought that the girl was insane and ridden with plague. In actuality, a Bloodsinger named Caelius had claimed her as his vessel in order to save her life. To show her gratefulness to her newfound family, Lailah swore to fight in the name of Yahweh for the rest of her days.
Personal accounts from Maes Mordechai and Lailah herself show that Lailah actually managed to convince Hikaru Shinta to mentor her both because of the potential she possessed and because her bloodsinger had once been one of Sumire’s dearest friends. Historians of the Order suspect that the bleed of emotion and memory between the pair was what caused Lailah to fall in love with Hikaru, but Hikaru – blinded as he was, at the time, by his grief over killing his wife Katherine – did not notice her at all. Nevertheless, she continued to devote each and every one of her fights to honoring his name, and honoring the connection they possessed through their Bloodsingers and through their “common cause” as warriors of Yahweh (Hikaru was, after all, a Brother in Violence). Unfortunately, this made her fail to realize the fact that her own Singer had forgotten his old attraction to Sumire, and was now in love with her.
PLOT POINTS AS OF 03 OCTOBER 2016
Samael’s Song, the only weapon Lailah ever carried into the field beyond herself, seems to have absorbed her intent. Curiously enough, it also houses Caelius himself. The Bloodsinger, upon Lailah’s death, begged Maes to seal him within his lady’s sword, for he firmly believed that there could be no other host as perfect as she was for him.
Samael’s Song naturally gravitates towards potential wielders who have stories similar to Lailah’s, happen to be Bladians, or are devoted, above all, to being embodiments of God’s justice on the battlefield. It is effectively a Bloodsinger that does not levy any of the ill effects of having a near-demonic entity occupying one’s brain upon its current masters, and appears to get stronger with every creature it bloods or life it takes. Furthermore, it should be noted that Samael’s Song is one of the few Sacred Weapons that occasionally selects wielders that don’t even belong to the Brotherhood.
Dominic has firmly attached himself to Maes' side at the moment. Where the Godhand goes, he goes.
AURORA SANTOS Alias: Fortitude, Chosen Wielder of Ameterasu's Paintbrush
ARTISAN / GRAY ROOK [KINGFISHER & COYOTE] The freshest member of Elaine’s Grace, recovered on Philippine soil. Maes found her – the only child of a not-quite-reformed drug addict – at a home for single mothers run by nuns who liked to kick the shit out of their charges in the name of God. The spark of Artistry manifested in Aurora early, when a tiger she had drawn on the floor leapt up and pinned the nun who was trying to kick in the womb of a disobedient “aunt” of hers. Maes pulled the girl out immediately, and the Brush latched on to her within a week of her rehabilitation at the Pound. Aurora hasn’t looked back since.
A Sacred Weapon that played an instrumental role during the Secret War in Heaven, crafted from a part of the God Machine itself - specifically, part of the same whole that the angel Azariel was made from. Amaterasu's Paintbrush is capable of channeling true words of power in pursuit of creating things from thin air. What it can make is limited only by its wielder's imagination, and by its wielder's inner strength. The Paintbrush is also capable of assimilating parts of the God Machine and "purifying" it from its corrupting influence. The cost of toggling that function, however, is high, and also runs the risk of alerting the Machine to the existence of its wielder.
PLOT POINTS AS OF 03 OCTOBER 2016
The actual potential of the Paintbrush and the nature of its sentience are yet to be determined by Relics specialists within the Brotherhood. What they know for certain is that the Paintbrush only chooses Artisans (rare supernaturals in themselves) for wielders and bolsters the Artisan's innate abilities on top of its known functions.
Aurora is currently in Falner, participating in experiments with academics from the United Vigil. The Kings are trying to determine how to maximize the Paintbrush to everyone's benefit, given how things have fallen apart in the Fifth World.
