ELA MARISIGAN Alias: Temperance, Chosen Wielder of the Smile of Janus
MAGE [MOROS; STYGIAN HERALD / NUMBER 014 OF THE THRONES, "THE SILENCE"]; TEMPERANCE, THE CHOSEN WIELDER OF THE SMILE OF JANUS / GRAY ROOK [WOLF] The youngest Vestalis currently operating on Philippine soil, a Moros Mage of exceptional talent given her age, and the sister that Estanislao Marisigan probably has a bit of a sister complex over. Mang Balisong – Ela’s mentor – suspected that she had been chosen by a Sacred Relic after attempting to take her under his wing as an Uncrowned King in training. He took it upon himself to contact Maes, and the rest is history. One of Ela’s pet projects at the moment is assisting the Philippine chapter of Talitha Kum, nuns who go undercover in brothels to combat sex trafficking. That MIGHT explain Ela’s occasionally interesting choice of clothes…
The weapon wielded by Cain, Orin the Green's first friend from the Fifth World and the first Riskbreaker ever chosen to become a Malice King even before the Duskriders came into the picture. It is said that Yahweh inspired him to make the scythe with Orin's guidance, and that Orin himself allowed him to use the void stone core of Janus, one of Orin's Tancred Golem brothers. The weapon's sentience, then, is attributed to the fact that the consciousness inhabiting the scythe is Janus himself.
The Smile of Janus is a variable weapon that usually takes the form of a scythe or sickle. It literally absorbs the "time" of whatever it cuts. The core of the weapon allows its wielder to then use the seconds/minutes/hours/days it has accumulated to manipulate the flow of time itself. Janus, however, is particular about THAT function of the Sacred Weapon, and only usually allows his wielders to passively view events from the past or peer into the future.

The powers Taning and Ela potentially possess as Numbers of the Lucifuge Thrones are two sides of the same coin. Their abilities involve the direct manipulation of the Abyss, and Paradox-related Arcane Mysteries.
The Smile of Janus is attracted to wielders whose personal stories revolve around the discovery and protection of one's family, or who have had to make calls as equally difficult as the one Cain made when he chose to walk away from the Dragon and the Daywalker, and when he also abandoned Orin himself to the Golem's disinterest in the Vigil. The burden of his grief was what brought him into the Brotherhood, where Maes helped him find his purpose. Unfortunately, Cain was one of the casualties of the Secret War in Heaven.
Ela is currently accompanying Abel in the Philippines as support. This also allows her to remain close to Sabina and Taning, whom she's loathe to be far from after everything that has happened.
